One of the most famous lists of games is that in François RabelaisLa vie de Gargantua et de Pantagruel (The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel, published c. 1532–64). In the original French the list contains 216 games, but in each translation the games that are named were changed and often expanded upon. Many of the games are either invented by Rabelais, or are games for which we no longer know the rules.

An in-depth examination of the games in the list lies below the table. ⚠️ This article, more than most, is a work-in-progress.

The first five columns give the lists from five different French editions; the remaining columns are from translations into English.

The lists of Nicolaas Jarichides Wieringa (Dutch, 1682) and Johann Fischarts (German, 1590) are given beneath the table as they diverge significantly.

⚠️ Note that the entries in the Screech column are out of sync with the others and I haven’t had time to match them up yet.

⚠️ This table is very wide and might scroll horizontally. My notes are at the far right.

The list in depth

For more on the games, see La Langue de Rabelais (p. 278–91).

Card games

The first set of entries in the list are either card games or terms used in card games — sometimes both.

flux “flush”

This has its well-known meaning as it remains today, a set of cards of the same suit. However, it is also the name of a game.M[p. 16–21]

prime “prime”

A prime in card terms was the opposite of a flush: it was to have one card of each suit. It will be seen that it is common for Rabelais to place similar or opposite terms near to each other in lists.

It is also the name of a game usually called Primero in English, or referred to by its Italian (Primiera) or Spanish (Primera) names.

It is also worth noting that ‘flux’ is a hand that scores in Primero.

vole (lit.) “robbery”

This is a game term meaning the same as the current term “grand slam”, that is, to win all the tricks played in a hand. The term was used in the games of l’hombre, la bête, la triomphe, and l’écarté.M[p. 26]

Urquhart gives “the beast” for this term, which was actually the name of a gambling game (called in French la bête) in which the term was used. Perhaps he was aware of this.
